The coding and decoding method uses a signal processor and at least one data memory, with pre-processing of the image data from a camera (C) by scaling and color conversion and movement estimation, using separate processing units (VVB,ME), in parallel with the coding or decoding. A further signal processing unit (VNB) provides parallel image data decoding for supplying a display, the image data provided by the processor and each of the processing units being held in different memory locations (R1-R7) of the memory, e.g. RAM. The decoded data is subjected to parallel filtering by a filter unit (VEP) before being fed to the display. An Independent claim is included for a device for coding and decoding of a digital image data stream .
