PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ophthalmic composition having an excellent antimicrobial activity for staphylococci which are pathogenic bacteria of a plurality of infectious diseases in external ophthalmic sites, readily formulable and having an enhanced antimicrobial activity without causing trouble such as ophthalmic irritation. SOLUTION: The ophthalmic composition comprises a sulfa drug and berberines. In this case, the sulfa drug is preferably sulfisomidine, sulfisoxazole or sulfamethizole and the berberines are preferably berberine chloride or berberine sulfate or an extract from Phellodendri Cortex or Coptis Rhizome. The formulation ratio of both the sulfa drug and the berberines is preferably (10-10,000):1 of the sulfa drug:berberines expressed in terms of mass ratio. |
