PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a switchback apparatus which may reverse head and tail of paper sheet stably and reliably and maintain a constant conveying pitch between paper sheets after reversing. SOLUTION: The switchback apparatus comprises two switchback parts 20R, 20L for reversing a conveying direction of the paper sheet and a detour conveying passage 8. While receiving the paper sheet at nips respectively between switchback rollers 23R, 23L and pinch rollers 24R, 24L, the switchback parts perform speed reduction, stop and acceleration in an opposite direction while sandwiching and holding the piper sheet so as to switchback the paper sheet. A stop time of the paper sheet at the switchback parts may be changed according to a length along the conveying direction of the paper sheet.
