PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for heating a glow plug in a method and a device for controlling heating of the glow plug for a diesel engine. SOLUTION: An engine temperature is measured in parallel with the initialization of an engine control system and independently from the initialization of the engine control system after a signal for starting the engine. When thus measured engine temperature is lower than a predetermined value, a glow command is generated. Since the start of heating procedures is automatically determined by a glow control system independently from the initialization of the engine control system, heating of the glow plug can be started before the initialization of the engine control system is completed, thereby shortening the time required for heating the glow plug.
