Apparatus for loading a plurality of substantially identical workpieces having a flat surface to be lapped on an annular lap plate, comprises: (i) a wear ring adapted to rest on the lap plate and defining a circular workpiecereceiving space on the lap plate, (ii) a disc-shaped pressure plate disposed loosely within the wear ring and adapted to rest upon the workpieces within the wear ring, (iii) a vertically disposed pressure plate guide, (iv) means on the lower end of the guide mounting the pressure plate on the guide for rotation thereon, (v) a fixed frame disposed over the annular lap plate, (vi) a vertically disposed shaft rotatably mounted in the frame in concentric relation to the annular lap plate, (vii) a horizontal guide having a part fixed to the lower end of the shaft, (viii) a crosshead slidable in the horizontal guide part, (ix) means securing the pressure plate guide in the crosshead for movement therewith, and (x) means on the frame and co-operating with the crosshead to prevent movement of the crosshead in the horizontal guide part except at a predetermined angular location of the horizontal guide part with respect to the frame.
