The network has several base stations (BTS). For the locating process, the received field strengths of receivable BTS at the mobile terminal are measured and correlated with corresp., location-dependent reference level data. The reference level data are compressed and stored in the mobile terminal as proximity functions, or their parameters. The position of the mobile terminal is computed by using measured reception field strengths and/or mutually related/reception field strengths in proximity functions. Independent claims are included for computer program and mobile terminal.
