PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semitransmissive liquid crystal display device attaining a display with high brightness and high contrast and being stably manufactured. SOLUTION: In the semitransmissive liquid crystal display device provided with a panel having a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between them and a polarizing plate and an optical retardation plate disposed on respective outer surfaces of the panel and having a region for a reflective display and a region for a transmissive display provided per pixel, liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer exhibit twisted nematic alignment with 15-50 deg. twist angle θt and products Δn.d of mean thickness d and a birefringence value Δn with respect to light of 550 nm wavelength of the liquid crystal layer in the region for the reflective display and the region for the transmissive display are respectively set to optimum values.
