PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a single crystal of lead tungstate having a high density, exhibiting a short decay time of fluorescence and emitting a large amount of light and useful for a scintillator for detecting radiant rays in medical treatments. SOLUTION: The single crystal of lead tungstate produced from tungsten trioxide and lead oxide or lead tungstate as main raw materials, contains at least two kinds of elements selected from Cd, Zn, Mo, Nb, Sb, La, Y and Gd in an amount of 0.01 to 20 mol % wherein a combination of Y and Nb is excepted.
