PURPOSE: A variable water pump is provided to achieve improved cooling performance by controlling the amount of coolant being pumped by the water pump in accordance with the operational condition of engine. CONSTITUTION: A variable water pump(30) comprises a rotating shaft(32) having a side coupled to a pulley(33), and a cylinder(34) arranged at the intermediate portion of the rotating shaft so as to accommodate a piston(40); an outer guide(36) formed by expanding the other side of the rotating shaft, which has a plurality of slots formed at the outer surface of the outer guide; an inner guide(38) formed within the outer guide, which has a plurality of slots formed to correspond to the slots of the outer guide; an impeller having a neck inserted into the slots of the outer guide and the inner guide, a blade(62) formed outside of the neck, and a tail(63) formed inside of the neck; the piston accommodated into the cylinder, which pushes a side of the tail of the impeller by being slid by the pressure; a first spring(42) for elastically supporting the other side of the tail of the impeller; and a solenoid valve(50) for cutting off the hydraulic pressure being transmitted into the cylinder, so as to move the piston.
