PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water cooled engine capable of shortening a cooling water return path 38 when installing without widely bypassing the side of a timing transmission device and thereby lessening a water path resistance. SOLUTION: In the water cooled engine, a water pump 14 is installed on the front end wall 30 of a cylinder block 6, an oil cooler 9 is arranged at one side of the block 6, and the jacket of the oil cooler 9 is communicated with the water pump 14 through the cooling water return path 38. In this case, the timing transmission device is arranged at the rear end of the block 6, and the terminal edge 38a of the return path 38 is installed in one side wall 29 of the block 6. The outlet 38b of the return path 38 is arranged on the front end wall 30 of the block 6 and faces the suction port 14a of the water pump 14.
