PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and a recording control method whereby a blank amount of a recording medium can be detected highly accurately and by an inexpensive mechanism even when the recording medium is transferred at high speed. SOLUTION: In recording while transferring the recording medium by every fixed amount every time a recording head is scanned, characteristics of a detection delay of a detecting mechanism for detecting an end of the recording medium set to a position separated by a predetermined distance from a recording position of the recording head on a transfer path of the recording medium are stored to a memory, and a position of the recording medium transferred in accordance with the progress of a recording operation which corresponds to the recording position of the recording head is stored to another memory. The detected position of the end in a transfer direction of the recording medium is corrected by the detection delay characteristics stored to the memory. The blank amount of the recording medium is evaluated on the basis of the corrected position of the end in the transfer direction of the recording medium and the position of the recording medium stored to another memory. The recording operation afterwards is controlled on the basis of the evaluation result.
