PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid-crystal composition maintaining a bookshelf structure, enlarging the liquid crystal temperature, suppressing lowering of a tilt angle and having high-speed responsiveness at low temperatures and a liquid- crystal element using the same. SOLUTION: This liquid-crystal composition comprises at least one kind of naphthalene compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R11 and R12 denote each a 1-24C alkyl group, a 2-24C alkoxyalkyl group or a 3-24C alkenyl group which may be substituted with a halogen atom; R11 and R12 may have an optically active asymmetric carbon; Y11 denotes a single bond or O group; X11 and X12 denote each hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; Y12 denotes COO group, CH2 CH2 group, OCH2 group or CH2 O group; and n denotes 0 or 1) and an optically inactive thiadiazole compound represented by general formula (2) (wherein, X21 and X22 denote each hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; and m and m' denotes each 1-20). The liquid-crystal element is obtained by using the composition.
