PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absorbent material keeping excellent water absorption property (water absorption ratio, water absorption speed, etc.), to an aqueous solution containing a high concentration of salts such as blood, body fluid (urine, sweat, etc.), etc., without impairing water absorption ratio and water absorption speed of pure water, low ion content water, etc., and having a high gel strength. SOLUTION: This water absorbent material contains as a base material an acrylonitrile polymer hydrolysate having a polyamino acid skeleton in the molecule, and the hydrolysate is at least one of the hydrolysate selected from the group consisting of a hydrolysate of a compound comprising a polyamino acid (salt) and an acrylonitrile polymer (1), and/or a compound comprising a polyamino acid (salt) and a hydrolysate of an acrylonitrile polymer (2), and/or a hydrolysate of the copolymer of a polyamino acid (salt) and acrylonitrile (3).
