Method for determining the average power of a laser beam in which an optical element (4) is placed in the beam path (3) of the laser (2). The laser light causes luminescence in the optical element and the intensity of the resultant luminescent light is measured by a sensor (5). An Independent claim is made for a device for determining the average power of laser light from the luminescence caused in an optical element placed in the beam path.
