The data signal transmission method has carrier signals (ts1,ts2) modulated with data signals (ds1,ds2) via a non-return-to-zero coding and a return-to-zero coding to provide two modulated signals (ms1,ms2) with different transmission bit rates and orthogonal polarizations, combined to provide an optical multiplex signal (oms). The modulated signals are extracted from the optical multiplex signal at the reception end by a polarization splitter (PBS), receiving the signal via polarization setting element (PTF) provided with a regulating signal (rs) dependent on the frequency of an electrical signal (es1,es2) obtained from one or both of the modulated signals.
