A water-based protective lacquer giving an air-drying coating on metals is emulsifier-free but contains a thickener with wetting properties and film-forming component based on an aqueous poly(meth)acrylate dispersion. <??>A water-based protective lacquer giving an air-drying coating on metals has the following characteristics <??>(1) it is emulsifier-free; <??>(2) it contains a thickener with wetting properties; and <??>(3) it has a water-dilutable film-forming component comprising an aqueous acrylate polymer dispersion whose polymeric part comprises by wt. <??>(A) 15-50% of a copolymer giving a fine aqueous dispersion and consisting of <??>(i) (meth)acrylic acid 1-20C alkyl ester(s), <??>(ii) vinyl aromatic(s) or monomers as per (i) above and <??>(iii) olefinically-unsaturated, up to 10C carboxylic acid(s) or anhydride(s); and <??>B) 50-85% solution polymer free of acid group-containing monomers but containing monomers as per (A)(i) and (A)(ii) above. |
