PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a clear image display of blood vessels in high contrast to other tissues such as mucous membranes and the like. SOLUTION: A level adjusting circuit 18, a binary circuit 20 and an edge detecting circuit 22 are provided. The level adjusting circuit 18 gains up a G signal (or B signal) output from a color conversion circuit 17. The binary circuit 20 generates a binary image from the processed G signal, and the edge detecting circuit 22 picks up a blood vessel location signal by an edge detection based upon the correlated double sampling signal. The color signal for red, green and blue (RGB) color signals in extracted to generate a blood vessel image from a three-state buffer 26 using the blood vessel locating signal. After the blood vessel color signal is gained up by an amplifier 28, it is added to the color signal of the original image. As a result, the blood vessel is displayed in high contrast to mucous membranes and the like, and the flow and concentration of blood, etc., in blood vessels can be advantageously observed.
