A shaft 6 is in sliding splined engagement with a sprocket 8 used to feed paper through data printing apparatus, a cam pocket 24 in a sleeve 22 fast with the hub of the sprocket receiving a radial pin 23 integral with a follower 10 also in sliding splined engagement with the shaft, a compression spring 25 biasing the sprocket and follower axially apart so that interaction between the pin and the inclined edge of the cam pocket tends to turn the two parts relatively to each other, thus taking-up backlash in their splined engagement with the shaft and locking them frictionally to the splines. By depression of a handle 31 to turn a lever 27 about its fulcrum 28, a fork 30 fast at the end of the lever is engaged with the follower 10 to compress the spring 25, so that the follower and the sprocket 8 are no longer frictionally locked to the splined shaft 6, along which they may now be slidden axially. The sprocket 8 is provided with paper-engaging teeth 20 passing through slots in guide plates 11; 17 sliding on a guide rod 5 parallel to the shaft 6, Fig. 1 (not shown).
