PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the modification of the conditions of forming an ultrasonic beam such as the position of a focus point and the shape of the ultrasonic beam even in an ultrasonic probe which does not adopt an electronic scanning system. SOLUTION: An ultrasonic transmission space between an oscillator 20 formed in the ultrasonic probe 10 and the surface of a test specimen 11 is filled with a sound medium 26. A temperature control unit 17 controls a heater 22 or a cooler 23 so as to change the temperature of the sound medium 26. Thus, the sound velocity of the sound medium 26 is varied so that the depth position of the focal point 44 of the ultrasonic beam is varied.
