PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a useful industrial product from waste such as pulp, paper, waste starch, to avoid exhaustion of oil resources and to solve the environmental pollution by waste. SOLUTION: The method for producing a polyester comprises (1) a process for obtaining one or more kinds of substitutedα-hydroxy acids represented by the formula HO-CHR-COOH (R is a >=1C and <=10C hydrocarbon group) by fermenting a saccharide with a bacterium and (2) a process for polymerizing the substituted 2-hydroxy acid or its derivative.
