An austenitic stainless steel which comprises at least 0.5 to 5.0 wt.% Cu and 0.1 to 5.0 wt.% Al, satisfies the requirement of Al/N>/=5, optionally has on the surface thereof an antimicrobial layer comprising a Cu-rich layer constituted by a strain-induced transformed layer and/or a SiO2-freed layer, and is excellent in antimicrobial activity and deep drawability.
