PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for transmitting channel adaptive multimedia data are provided to optimize bandwidth efficiency using the storing space and calculation ability of a server, and reproduce a multimedia with optimum quality as to a channel characteristic provided from each receiver by being dynamically adapted to channel environment and transmitting multimedia data. CONSTITUTION: A multimedia data storing device(210) generates the same multimedia contents as a plurality of bit streams, and classifies and stores the generated bit streams. A channel bandwidth estimator(230) estimates a corresponding channel bandwidth with a multimedia reproducing terminal(20) connected through a wired/wireless transmission network(220). A frame error detector(240) detects a frame error of the multimedia contents transmitted through a channel. A selector(250) corresponds to the multimedia contents selected from the connected multimedia reproducing terminal(20), and selects one among the stored bit streams on the basis of the estimated bandwidth or detected error information. A data transmitter(260) transmits the selected one bit stream to the connected multimedia reproducing terminal(20) through the wired/wireless transmission network(220).
