PURPOSE: A variable device for the position of an upper knife of a steel plate cutter is provided to move the upper knife returning upward after cutting the steel plate and moving downward to a fixed lower knife backward not to contact a cross section of the steel plate, to prevent truncated chips, damages of the cross section and of the upper knife, and to regulate simply a gap between the upper and lower knife. CONSTITUTION: A variable device for the position of an upper knife of a steel plate cutter is composed of a basic body(10) including a guider(11) having a wedge member(19) connected to a rear side of an upper knife head(103) and moving back and forth, a cylinder(12) supporting the guider forward, and a plurality of compression springs(17) supporting elastically a front slider(16) coupled to the front side of the upper knife head backward. An operation unit(30) comprises an operation bar(32) moving up and down in contacting and in non-contacting with an eccentric unit(31) of a main rotary shaft(108) rotating a rotary eccentric shaft(111), and moves the upper knife back as the operation bar descends by a front end of a connecting shaft(33) connecting the lower end with the rear end of the operation bar linking to one end of the guider.
