FLOAT OPERATED DISCHARGE VALVE ASSEMBLY FOR FUEL TANK

PURPOSE: A discharge valve assembly by operating a float in a fuel tank is provided to seal a tank outlet safely by using an elastomeric valve member in filling the tank, and to secure re-opening of the outlet by contacting the annular bead rim to the support plate in finishing filling and to the inclined surface of the cage in moving the float down while recovering fuel. CONSTITUTION: A float assembly(32) has an elastomeric valve disk(46) with an annular bead rim caged for limited lost motion movement on the top of the float. A rigid backing plate(50) for the valve disk is pivoted on a curved surface on the top of the float to ensure self-alignment of the valve disk on the vent port seat when the float is moved upward by the rising liquid level for closing the vent during refueling. As fuel is supplied from the tank, the float is dropped and the angled top of the cage is contacted to the bead rim on the valve disk to effect the peel-away re-opening of the valve.
