PURPOSE: A muffler used in a vehicle is provided to optimize a performance of an engine by adjusting back pressure of exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION: A muffler includes a casing(2) installed at one side of an exhaust pipe(14), which discharges exhaust gas generated from an engine towards an atmosphere. An apparatus for applying back pressure to exhaust gas is installed in the casing(2). A partition plate(6) is provided in the casing(2). The partition plate(6) is formed at one side thereof with a center hole(6a) and formed at the other side thereof with a plurality of orifice holes(6b). The center hole(6a) of the partition plate(6) has an oval shape. A back pressure varying device is provided to vary back pressure applied to exhaust gas by selectively guiding exhaust gas towards the center hole(6a) or the orifice holes(6b) of the partition plate(6).
