Electron bombardment butt welding - of cylindrical workpieces

Cylindrical workpieces esp. lengths of pipe line are butt welded by disposings a fluid tight chamber around the weld line in which a primary e.g. 10-2 Torr vacuum is formed. The chamber carries an electron gun debouching into the chamber and in which a secondary e.g. 10-4-10-6 Torr vacuum is formed. The gun turns with the chamber to form a continuous circular weld line.
