摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that cost increase is incurred when a plurality of sapphire substrates are used as transparent substrates in a picture display device. SOLUTION: The picture display device has color decomposition means DM1 and DM2 which decompose illumination light into a plurality of color light beams, a plurality of picture display elements 9R, 9G, and 9B which modulate the plurality of color light beams, respectively, and a color synthesis means 11 which combines the plurality of color light beams modulated with these image display elements to achieve color picture display. In the respective optical paths of the plurality of color light beams, transparent substrates 8a on each of which a polarizing element 8b is to be stucked are provided to at least on one side between the incidence surface side and emission surface side of the picture display element. The thickness of the transparent substrate disposed on at least one optical path among the plurality of optical paths of the color light beams is made thicker (e.g. 1.2 times or more) than the thickness of the transparent substrates disposed on the other optical paths.
