Cationic azo compounds (I) are new. Cationic azo compounds of formula W1-W2-N=N-W3 (I) are new: W1 = a group of formula (II); W2 = a group of formula (III); W3 = a group of formula (IV). Independent claims are also included for: (1) a composition for dyeing keratinic fibers, comprising at least one compound (I); (2) a method for dyeing keratinic fibers, comprising applying the composition of (1) to the fibers; (3) a kit comprising the composition of (1) in one compartment and an oxidizing composition in another compartment. n = 0-3; X1 = N or CR<7>; X2 = N or CR<8>; Z1 = CHR<2>, O, S or NR<14>; Z2 = O, S or NR<15>; R<0>-R<12>, R<14> = 1-10C (un)saturated (cyclo)aliphatic hydrocarbyl, optionally with one or more C atoms replaced by O, N, S or SO2 and optionally substituted with halogen; R<13>, R<15> = 1-8C alkyl optionally substituted with OH, 1-2C alkoxy, 2-4C (poly)hydroxyalkyl, NH2, mono- or di(1-2C alkyl)amino, COOH, SO3H and optionally substituted phenyl; X = an anion; alternatively, R<5>+R<6> forms an aromatic carbocycle.
