PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator having a lamp light source which can illuminate the pupil of the objective lens uniformly and having resolving power approximately identical in the vertical direction and the horizontal direction, and to provide a microscope provided with this illuminator. SOLUTION: The illuminator is equipped with: a lamp light source having a pair of light-emitting electrodes 27 and 28 which are opposed to each other and further having a maximum brightness area H in the vicinity of the light- emitting side electrode; an illumination optical system which irradiates an object with the light of the lamp light source through the objective lens; and an optical system which makes the position of the lamp light source conjugate with the pupil of the illumination optical system. When the image of the maximum brightness area H of the lamp light source is formed on the pupil 40 of the objective lens and an orthogonal coordinate system is assumed which has the center of the pupil 40 of the objective lens as the origin coordinates O (0, 0) and the direction connecting the pair of light-emitting electrode images 27 and 28 as the Y axis, the radius of the pupil of the objective lens R and the center coordinates of the maximum brightness area image (0, P) satisfy 0<P<=(2/3) R, wherein P is taken in the direction of the light-emitting side electrode.
