Esterified hydroxylated steroid derivatives (I) (e.g. based on pregnenolone or dehydroepiandrosterone) are new. Steroid derivatives of formula (I) are new. A1-A2-A3 = C=CH2CH(OR2), CH-CH2-CH(OR2), CH-CH(OR5)-CH(OR2) or CH-CH(OR5)-CH2; R1 = H, sulfate, phosphate, optionally substituted acetyl or -CO-R'1; R'1 = benzenoid aromatic residue or 5- or 6-membered heteroaryl containing one or more heteroatom(s) (both optionally substituted); R2, R5 = sulfate, phosphate, optionally substituted acetyl or -CO-R'1; R3 = H, =O, OH, COR4, CH(OH)R4, =CH-Me or -CHR4-Me; and R4 = optionally substituted alkyl. With the proviso that R1 and R2 are not both acetyl.
