PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium wherein sufficient C/N is obtained in short-wave recording even when a magneto-resistance reproducing head having a narrow track width. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium having one or more layers on one surface of a nonmagnetic support, the uppermost layer being made a magnetic layer mainly containing ferromagnetic powders and a binder, the dried thickness of the magnetic layer is set to 100 nm or lower, and a weight saturation magnetic flux density (Bs/4πρ) which is a ratio between the saturation magnetic flux density and the coating density of the magnetic layer is set to >=120 Am<2> /kg. Thus, a good output and good C/N are obtained. The Mrt value of the magnetic layer is set to 2.4 nTm or lower, and/or a squareness ratio is set to 0.85 or higher. Thus, a good result is obtained. Further, the average long axis length of magnetic powders used for the magnetic layer is set to 80 nm or lower. Thus, a much better result is obtained.
