HYPOCHLORITE-FREE METHOD FOR PRODUCING STABLE CARBOXYLATED CARBOHYDRATE PRODUCT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a stable fibrous carboxylated cellulose which can be produced by the conventional facilities of papermaking plant and used by utilizing a chemical substance friendly to the environment without requiring hypochlorous acid. SOLUTION: A carboxylated hydrocarbon product is produced by a method including oxidation of a carbohydrate compound by a method that the carbohydrate compound is reacted in an aqueous environment with a sufficient amount of a primary oxidant selected from the group consisting of sterically hindered heterocyclic oxoammonium salts each having noα-hydrogen substitution at the carbon atom adjacent to an oxoammonium nitrogen, corresponding amine, hydroxylamine, nitroxide of the oxoammonium salt and their mixture and a second oxidant selected from chlorine dioxide and a latent supply source of chlorine dioxide in the amount sufficient to cause at least 2 meq/100 g increase in carboxyl substitution in the carbohydrate.
