PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas burner unit to automatically discharge condensed drain accumulated at a gas burner ring during extinction of a burner, and to prevent the generation of a thermal stress at the gas burner ring and the occurrence of a thermal fatigue crack of a gas injection hole in the tip of a burner nozzle, and also to provide its operation method. SOLUTION: The gas burner unit is formed such that an annular burner ring 11 is connected to fuel piping 7 to feed gas fuel, and one or more burner nozzles 5 in which injection holes 18 to inject gas are formed in a tip part at an equal interval are connected to the burner ring 11, and drain accumulated at the internal part of the burner ring 11 during extinction of a burner is discharged from the burner ring 11 to the external part of a furnace 12, and drain piping 19 having a U-shaped part 21 to temporarily trap the drain is connected to the lowest portion of the burner ring 11.
