Preparation of N-(w-bromoalkyl)phthalimides (I) is new. Preparation of N-(w-bromoalkyl)phthalimides (I) comprises reaction of a potassium phthalimide (II) with an alpha ,w-dibromoalkane of formula Br(CH2)nBr (III) by: (a) condensing (II) and (III) in the molar ratio (III):(II) of 2.5:6, by stirring together without a co-solvent at 50-130 deg C; (b) eliminating excess (III) under reduced pressure below 150 deg C; (c) dissolving the residue in a low-boiling alcohol at a temperature around the boiling point and filtering; and (d) cooling the solution then filtering to obtain (I) which is then dried under reduced pressure at below 50 deg C. n = 2-8; R = 1-4C hydrocarbon, halo, or alkoxy and when more than one group R is present these may be the same or different; and x = 0-4. |
