PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently regenerate a DPF 9. SOLUTION: A HC adsorbing catalyst 8 having a catalyst metal supported by a HC adsorbing material is provided in an exhaust passage on the upstream side of the DPF 9. The temperature of the HC adsorbing catalyst 8 is increased so that the catalyst metal has higher activity on condition that the catalyst metal is in an inactive condition or in a low active condition and the HC amount of the HC adsorbing material is determined to be a preset value or more when the regeneration of the DPF 9 is required. The DPF 9 is heated by utilizing heat of oxidizing reaction of HC adsorbed in the HC adsorbing material.
