Active materials such as herbal extracts, allantoin, citric acid, vitamins, anti-inflammatory agents, sun blocking agents, emollients or antimicrobial agents may be delivered to the skin of a subject in a composition comprising an effective amount of particular ceramic hydroxyapatite. The ceramic hydroxyapatite particles are uniform and spherical with a mean diameter of from 1 to about 10 micrometers. The composition may optionally contain hyaluronic acid. A preferred skin cleansing and moisturizing composition, comprises triclosan as an antimicrobial agent.
