PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal/Al2 O3 composite material which can be easily worked even in the case of a product of complicated shape and has high strength and high toughness even at a high temperature not lower than 1,000 deg.C and also to provide a manufacturing method by which such a composite material can be easily and homogeneously obtained in an arbitrary chemical composition. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method comprises the following steps: a step where a glass compact composed essentially of SiO2 is allowed to react with a melt of Al or Al alloy to prepare a composite material containing an Al2 O3 matrix of network structure; and a step where the composite material containing the Al2 O3 matrix of network structure, prepared in the above step, is immersed in a melt of an Al-base alloy once or a plurality of times. By using this manufacturing method, the metal/Al2 O3 composite material in which the voids of the Al2 O3 matrix of network structure are densely filled with the Si-containing Al-base alloy can be obtained.
