Reducing (M1) accumulation of nitrate in a plant by inhibiting the chloroplast chloride channel CLC-e, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing (M2) a plant that under-accumulates nitrate; (2) an expression cassette (EC) containing a polynucleotide (I) comprising at least part of the clc-e gene, or its complement, or sequences with at least 70% identity; (3) a vector containing the EC; (4) a plant cell transformed with the EC; and (5) plants that under-accumulate nitrate, produced by (M2).
