A vent assembly for the top panel (18) of a seal (14) for a food container (10) including a vent opening (38) in the seal panel at least partially surrounded by an upwardly opening recess (26), with the vent opening (38) and recess (26) being below the upper surface of the seal panel (18). A vent cover (56), including a depending plug (66) selectively receivable in the vent opening (38), is pivotally mounted by a hinge assembly which included a hinge pin (60) on said cover received within spaced trunnion bores (50) in the recess (26) adjacent the vent opening (38). The trunnion bores (50) are laterally enlarged relative to the pin (60) diameter and of a generally oval configuration. The configuration and mounting of the seal assembly prevent the seal from dislodging inadvertently when the container is subjected to extremes of temperature.
