An e.g. LCD display forms a planar light modulator. A bifocal, cylindrical Fresnel lens (1) having two differing focal lengths f1 and f2 is used. Two groups of linear light sources (2, 4) are arranged parallel to the edge structures on the Fresnel Lens, adjacent to the structured surface. In 3D mode, light from sources of the first group is projected by the first set of edge structures, through the modulator and into the pupils of the observer, forming a real image. Image regions of the modulator associated with the second set of edge structures, remain dark as seen by the observer (3). In 2D mode, both groups of sources and Fresnel edge structures form a real image.
