Effect yarns are spun by varying the effectiveness of a sliver compaction device, e.g. a perforated roller (19), according to a predetermined pattern. This can be achieved by altering the position (28) or the pressure (29) exerted by the nip roller (24), or by altering the suction by changing the slot size or position, or by varying the air pressure. An Independent claim is also included for a pneumatic sliver compaction system that can be varied with time in this way. As an alternative to varying the width, length, or inclination of the suction slot itself, a cover (25) that can be moved in the appropriate directions (26, 27) can be placed over the suction slot (23) to achieve a similar effect.
