A drinking water filter housing (1) has a filter cartridge insert whose condition is monitored by an electronic sensor linked to a read-out display unit. The display may be an intelligent electrical component (13) with a memory function coupled to a battery (10). The electronic circuit has an element (13) whose operation is linked to the housing (1) angle with respect to the true vertical (A1) and only registers and displays a signal when the housing is inclined by more than a pre-defined angle to the vertical. The electrical component is a switch linked to the battery. The switch is open when the housing is vertical and closed when the housing is inclined to the vertical. The memory devices registers and progressively accumulates time data relating to filter use.
