METHOD OF DECONTAMINATING METAL SPECIES IN WATER USING CAUSTIC MAGNESIUM

The invention relates to the use of a low-cost, highly-reactive magnesium oxide which is available in large quantities in order to eliminate metals from water. The aforementioned material is applied alone or mixed with other inert or reactive products such that the mixture is permeable to the flow of water and acts as a filter. Said material can be installed as a filler in trenches to intercept the passage of water or as a filer in reservoirs and channels through which a surface water course flows. The inventive method makes use of the natural flow of water and an excessive amount of material is applied without the need for the material to be dosed or permanent attention given. The magnesium oxide dissolves thereby neutralising the acidity of the water and stimulating the precipitation of the hydroxides of the dissolved metals.
