<p>A thin compressible overhead airbag module (14) provides inflatable overhead passive restraint protection to out of position occupants within a vehicle. The flat module design is compressed following assembly, making the compressed module thin (14) enough to be mounted in the overhead space between the vehicle roof skin (54) and the interior headliner (40a). The module includes an inflator (26), an inflatable cushion (28), and a two-piece compressible housing (24). The compressible housing (24) provides substantially more packaging space for the cushion (28). The roof area design allows the use of a longer, small diameter inflator (26). Upon activation, the car forward location of the inflator (26) relative to the inflatable cushion (28) forces the housing (24) to deform below the inflator (26). The inflation force generated by the inflator (26) effectively pulls the inflatable cushion (28) out of the housing (24).</p> |
