Device for determining the water retention capacity has the following characteristics: a sample material supporting filter plate (9) that forms the base of a settling cylinder (7); a horizontal capillary measurement tube (20) that measures water uptake and is filled with water via a conical section connection pipe (12) that supplies bubble-free water; a filling funnel (1) that delivers the sample material to the center of the filter and a conical bung (9) that acts to prevent evaporation.
