A drilling system is provided for drilling a borehole (3) into an earth formation (5), the drilling system comprising pump means (19, 30) for pumpin g drilling fluid into the borehole (3) and discharge means (50) for dischargin g drilling fluid from the borehole (3). The discharge means (50) comprises at least one pressure chamber (60, 61) for temporarily accommodating drilling fluid being discharged from the borehole (3), and control means (69) for controlling the fluid inflow into each pressure chamber (60, 61).
