Production of an antibiotic coating on a porous body comprises impregnation with an aqueous cationic antibiotic solution and impregnation with an aqueous anionic surfactant solution in either order with intermediate drying. Production of an antibiotic coating on a body having interconnecting microcavities comprises impregnation with an aqueous antibiotic solution and impregnation with an aqueous surfactant solution in either order with intermediate drying, where the antibiotic (I) is an aminoglycoside, tetracycline, lincosamide or 4-quinolone antibiotic or chlorhexidine and the surfactant (II) is an alkyl sulfate, alkyl sulfonate, alkylaryl sulfate, dialkylaryl sulfate, alkylaryl sulfonate, dialkylaryl sulfonate, cycloalkyl sulfate, cycloalkyl sulfonate or alkylcycloalkyl sulfate. An Independent claim is also included for a body having interconnecting microcavities in which the microcavities are coated with a salt or complex of (I) and (II).
