The invention concerns a scalable video coding method whereby an input signal containing video image data is sent to a plurality of coders comprising quantizers. The coders quantize the video signal on different resolution planes with different levels of quality using quantizing parameters, prior to carrying out entropic coding (ECi). Said coders are mutually connected so that at least one or several coders, instead of carrying out an entropic coding of quantized transformation signals (Li), exclude quantized differential signals ( DELTA Xi; Di) from entropic coding, thereby enabling to obtain quantized output signals (Di) on the different resolution planes.
