A matrix display has pixels (2), each pixel including a programmable memory element (30) arranged in parallel across a capacitance (28). The voltage on the capacitance controls a display element (25). The arrangement can be run in a normal mode, with all of the memory elements (30) in a high resistance state so that the matrix display can be driven dynamically. Alternatively, in a static (low power) mode of operation, selected memory elements (30) are switched to a low resistance state and the memory elements (30) are programmed with a static image which may be displayed. During displaying in the static mode, all data lines (6) are supplied with the same voltage and a select voltage is cyclically applied to the row select lines as in conventional arrangements. Thereby pixels with a high resistance state memory element emit light while those with a low resistance state memory element emit almost no light.
|
