A cantilevered beam sensor (33) includes an elongated beam (35) with a region of continuously diminishing cross-sectional area near one end (45). The region cross-sectional area diminishes nonlinearly with distance from said one end. A clamp (55) grips a fixed beam end and a strain responsive sensing element (37) such as a piezoresistive element is fixed to a surface (53) of the beam within the region. Upon beam flexure, the neutral axis (59) of the region of continuously diminishing cross-sectional area exhibits a substantially constant radius of curvature (61, 63) and the sensor (37) is subjected to the same stress per unit deflection regardless of the spacing of the sensor from the clamp (55) thereby increasing the manufacturing tolerance on the location of the sensor. Preferably, the change of the cross-sectional area of the beam with respect to distance from the clamp (55) is a monotonically decreasing function throughout the region.
|
